May Wrap Up – The Lady Rogue

May Wrap Up & Review

Another month, another book, but great news for the UK! Well mainly just England…our lockdown has relaxed every so slightly! Like miniscule tiny itty bitty amounts but the point is it happened! YAY!

Review: The Lady Rogue

The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett was this months pick for our Bookstaholics Anonymous Readalong over on Instagram. It’s described as a “swashbuckling historical fantasy adventure” and “Indiana Jones with a female lead”. There’s magic, romance and an epic game of cat and mouse across Europe!

Needless to say this was a very popular choice as it is Jenn Bennett’s first YA fantasy book! We absolutely loved everything from the folklore to the angsty teen romance.

There’s puzzles, romance, adventure, gothic villages, dark castles, and SO MUCH BANTER! We’ve honestly never read anything like this in the ya fantasy genre before! It’s like a love letter to classic adventure movies like Indiana Jones and The Mummy – in fact, Jenn told our book group that she’s a huge fan of both! Her yearning for an ‘Indiana Jane’ character when she was younger led her to creating Theo! Also, Evie’s epic *I AM A LIBRARIAN* speech in The Mummy inspired Theo’s hilarious drunken outburst in this book.

Jenn also told us how much research went into The Lady Rogue and it really shows. The sense of place, history and culture is incredible, you feel like you’re there in Romania with Huck and Theo. The descriptions of the towns, the markets and even the language is so authentic!

Our book club couldn’t believe this was a stand-alone as there are so many places this story could go! Jenn said there’s definitely scope for more books so keep all your fingers and toes crossed and bombarded the publishers with the request – lets help Jenn get this into trilogy territory!

It was so cool having Jenn Bennett spend time talking to us, its really special when they take time out of their busy schedules to chat! We will be posting the Q&A tomorrow so keep your eyes open for the full insights!

We hope the review has inspired you to pick up the book! If you have already read it, do you agree with our thoughts? Tell us your own opinions of it in the comments below…

Lots of love,

Kayleigh & Tish xxx
